Tidy v’s Organised
Is there a fundamental difference between being tidy and being organised?
Most of us think of tidying as making a space look neater. It's that last-minute dash to put things away before someone knocks on the door!
But is that being organised?
What is the difference?
Being organised means you know where things belong and can find them when you need them.
Imagine a friend is on their way over. Instead of rushing around wondering where to hide everything, you already know exactly where each item belongs. You simply put things back in their place. The stress and mental load are so much lighter.
The same thing happens when you unpack the groceries. Rather than standing in the pantry trying to work out where everything should go, each item already has a home. You simply put it back where it belongs.
That's why organising makes tidying so much easier.
However, organised does not always look tidy!
I am about to give a very personal example of two different systems in use in my own home.
Both organised, one is tidy, the other is what I lovingly refer to as captured chaos.
This is about underwear 🫨
One person loves theirs folded neatly into small stacks and lined up on a shelf inside their cupboard.
The other flings them into a drawer, kind of like throwing things into a bucket.
Both systems are organised because each person always knows exactly where to locate a clean fresh pair of jocks!
But I have a feeling only one system would be considered tidy😅.
Tidy makes things look calmer.
Organised means it feels calmer.
And organised makes it easier to truly be tidy.
